Eliminations
In round one of eliminations Lee Street faced off against Gene Collier.
Gene's prestage light was malfunctioning which may have been a factor in Gene
red-lighting giving the win to Lee who ran a 6.702 at 106.37. Next up
were Olliver Frey and Damon Harmon. In an awesome matchup, Olly ran a
6.303 to Damon's 6.302, but Olly also got a holshot giving him the win.
Denis Elliot was next up, but as he pulled into the water box, he was waved off
by the tower. The tree had shut down completely this time, and they
needed to reset it. After several hours of attempts to get things running
again, and even an attempt at re-installing their old tree which they pulled
out of storage, the track folks finally gave up and the race was called.
Points were awarded for rounds run and the purse was split among those who were
still in the running when the mechanical failure occured.
I get by with a little help from my friends
One of the best parts of this race was watching how despite our sometimes
heated debates over rules, schedules and so forth, when any of us finds
ourselves in trouble, we can count on our friends to be there to lend a
hand. The first example of this in Roxboro was when the fuel pump on the
Skaggs racing team truck died just as it rolled into the track Saturday
night. A couple of phone calls were made to people on other teams who
were still on their way in and a search was on for the parts to get things
going again. Sunday morning, as soon as the parts store opened, Warren
had the parts in hand and everything was good to go before the track morning
curfew was lifted. (Roxboro requests that no one starts their race cars before
noon on Sunday out of respect for a nearby church.) The next person who
found himself in need was Olly who decided to make the most of the downtime and
switch engines, but found himself in need of a connector to finish the
job. While Olly, Helmut, Jeremy, and a few others worked to get things
together on the mechanical side, a multi-team search party went through the
pits looking for the missing piece. Eventually Jeremy put down the
wrenches and joined the search party just in time to find it. A couple
more tweaks and the Frey racing team was back in business. Then, Damon
found himself in need of a quick transmission swap, and again people from other
teams jumped in to make sure there were enough hands to get the job done.
Then Lee Street lost his clutch bearing, and he and his crew cheif Van found
themselves on the receiving end of some much needed help to get the engine
pulled and back in during the last round of qualifying. This type of
sportsmanship emphasizes the real reason we're all here: racing and friendship.
Thanks to all who attended, and we look forward to seeing everyone again next
month in Piedmont.

Thunder Valley Volks Rally Results
The success of the first ever Thunder Valley Volks Rally was an
opportunity for our drivers to see first hand one of the finest racing venues
in the country, and for the track to get a taste of what professional VW racing
has to offer. Unfortunately, the success of this event was met by some
harsh opposition and despite a great effort to overcome the inaugural
event stigma that has plagued so many events before it, mother nature stepped
in and upheld the curse. Saturday, though the forcast had called for the
possibility of scattered showers, there was hardly a cloud in the sky as the
first of the cars took to the staging lanes. Some high winds however made
many wonder how the cars would behave, especialy the pro stocks and pro
mods. The cars took the field though and the first round of the quick
shootout qualifying went off smooth as silk. The pro stocks however
followed with a nail biting start as ECPRA driver Tay Woykowski got loose on
the top end and smacked the wall hard. Tay was shaken, but not
injured. The fastback however suffered heavy damage and had to be carted
off the track. The track was inspected, cleaned, and prepped and the
drivers met to decide if maybe the wind had been a factor, and to decide if we
should call the event. A talk with Tay calmed some of our fears about the
wind, but just to be sure, ECPRA Vice President Gene Collier suited up and ran
his trusty blue ghia down the track. A call from the top end confirmed
that the top end was a little loose, but he did not believe the wind was a
significant safety concern, and the pro stock race was back on. In the
quick shootout class, ECPRA newcomer Brannon Young made a strong showing at his
home track, qualifying first and winning the class against runner up Dale
Adams. In pro stock, it was Olliver Frey who turned in the best time of
the day running a strong 6.21 ET @ 110.8 mph. But that would turn out to
be all for the pro stocks this weekend. On Sunday morning the temperature
took a sharp downward turn, and the winds remained strong as they had been on
Saturday. If traction had been a concern on Saturday, Sunday proved to be
much worse. Then to make matters worse, clouds began rolling in promising
rain was on its way. A vote was made and the drivers determined that it
would be unsafe for them to continue the race. A meeting was held with
Bristol Dragway Managers Brandon Cross and Jack Cocklin and the pro stock
portion of the event was cancelled. The bracket racers who stuck out the
cold were combined into one class, and wrapped up eliminations just before the
rain came in. Those who have been there know what an awesome venue
Thunder Valley is, and we all believe this has the potential to be a huge
event. I'd like to personally thank Brandon, Jack, Wes, and all of the
Bristol Dragway staff for everything they put into this event.
--Bob
Also, thanks to Tiffany Skaggs who did a great job of capturing the event
here.

Silver Dollar Shootout #6 2008 ECPRA Pro Stock Season Opener
A field of six was in attendance for this year's pro stock season opener.
Ed & Tay with their sweet fast back, Alan Fore with his killer notch, and
Damon Harmon, Olly Frey, Denis Elliot, and Lee Street all with their big bad
bugs. Despite the Silver Dollar team's best efforts to prepare the track,
traction problems seemed to plague the season opener again this year. But
that didn't stop the teams from battling it out. With the new spec fuel
rules in place, the records are reset, so a fastest time of the day counts as a
new record. In the second round of qualifying Damon Harmon overcame the
traction woes and laid down a 6.04 securing the top qualifying spot and a new
record as he backed it up in the first elimination round against Olly Frey who
had apparent mechanical problems off and on throughout the day. Also in
round one, Denis Elliot took the win over Tay who seemed to be having
transmission problems. In the third matchup Alan Fore ran a 6.54 to beat
out Lee Street who brought home a 7.01. But in the process, Alan broke
something and was unable to make the call for the semi-finals. As a
result Damon and Denis advanced directly to the finals where Denis fouled
during staging giving Damon the automatic win.

Silver Dollar 6 also marked our first use of the new fuel testing
equipment. Here's a closer look at exactly what goes into a fuel test.
