A few years ago, when I was in charge of the "feature cars" at the Michigan Vintage VW Festival (the year we got flooded out of the park in Ypsi and took to the streets!), I managed to personally call and invite every aircooled VW racer I knew from various corners of the racing world-- drag cars, sand rails, roadrace cars, Formula Vees. The theme was "Stock to Speed" and I wanted something with a bit more than 36 HP there. I got it! It was as much fun as the year the Gene Berg Memorial Cruise came to town.
This year, I haven't had a chance to do all of that again. If you know somebody who likes to show their car-- especially if they like to strut their stuff in front of the "stock and original" old farts, tell them I want to personally invite them to bring their machines to the 2009 Fest in Plymouth, MI.
This is the 22nd Annual Michigan Vintage VW Festival, this year sponsored by Karmann USA, at their headquarters in Metro Detroit. This is a celebration of all things AIRCOOLED in the world of VW. Sunday May 17th. Swap, show, music, food, raffle, auction, night-before kick-off party--the adventure of Michigan in May. Will it snow? Will it be in the 80's? Gotta show up to find out!
Show registration is only $8. Tours of Karmann's manufacturing facility, where Mustang and Chrysler convertibles are produced, will be offered along with an introduction to the company's recently launched vintage top restoration program, Karmann Classics.
All proceeds benefit Southeast Michigan non-profits. Over the last few years, the Vintage Festival has donated over $35,000 to Michigan charities.
