Eliminations

In round one of eliminations Lee Street faced off against Gene Collier.  Gene's prestage light was malfunctioning which may have been a factor in Gene red-lighting giving the win to Lee who ran a 6.702 at 106.37.  Next up were Olliver Frey and Damon Harmon.  In an awesome matchup, Olly ran a 6.303 to Damon's 6.302, but Olly also got a holshot giving him the win.  Denis Elliot was next up, but as he pulled into the water box, he was waved off by the tower.  The tree had shut down completely this time, and they needed to reset it.  After several hours of attempts to get things running again, and even an attempt at re-installing their old tree which they pulled out of storage, the track folks finally gave up and the race was called.  Points were awarded for rounds run and the purse was split among those who were still in the running when the mechanical failure occured.

I get by with a little help from my friends

One of the best parts of this race was watching how despite our sometimes heated debates over rules, schedules and so forth, when any of us finds ourselves in trouble, we can count on our friends to be there to lend a hand.  The first example of this in Roxboro was when the fuel pump on the Skaggs racing team truck died just as it rolled into the track Saturday night.  A couple of phone calls were made to people on other teams who were still on their way in and a search was on for the parts to get things going again.  Sunday morning, as soon as the parts store opened, Warren had the parts in hand and everything was good to go before the track morning curfew was lifted. (Roxboro requests that no one starts their race cars before noon on Sunday out of respect for a nearby church.)  The next person who found himself in need was Olly who decided to make the most of the downtime and switch engines, but found himself in need of a connector to finish the job.  While Olly, Helmut, Jeremy, and a few others worked to get things together on the mechanical side, a multi-team search party went through the pits looking for the missing piece.  Eventually Jeremy put down the wrenches and joined the search party just in time to find it.  A couple more tweaks and the Frey racing team was back in business.  Then, Damon found himself in need of a quick transmission swap, and again people from other teams jumped in to make sure there were enough hands to get the job done.  Then Lee Street lost his clutch bearing, and he and his crew cheif Van found themselves on the receiving end of some much needed help to get the engine pulled and back in during the last round of qualifying.  This type of sportsmanship emphasizes the real reason we're all here: racing and friendship.

Thanks to all who attended, and we look forward to seeing everyone again next month in Piedmont.
